Will Smith is bringing the story of two of the world’s greatest athletes to life. The movie will focus on the Serena and Venus Williams upbringing by their father Richard.
Deadlinereported that Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment has partnered with Star Thrower Entertainment to produce a movie based on the life of Richard Williams. According to reports, the film, which is titled King Richard, will detail the trials Williams faced raising two prolific athletes while doubling as their coach despite having no experience with the sport. It is said that the movie will touch on the 78-page plan Williams made when his daughters were around four and how it helped turn them into once-in-a-lifetime athletes.
He began giving them tennis lessons and the girls learned the game on cracked, weedy public courts in Compton, reportedly after their father brawled with young toughs who were not fans of the sport and would not make way. The Williams sisters went on to become two of the greatest female players in tennis history, with Serena arguably the best ever, with 23 Grand Slam tournament wins.
Smith is also in talks to star as Richard. The 50-year-old actor will next be seen in Disney’s Aladdin.
