Paramount Sets A 2020 Release Date For Coming To America Sequel

The long awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s cult classic Coming To America is heading to theaters in 2020. Paramount has set an August 7th, 2020 for the upcoming comedy.

The studio hired Blackish creator Kenya Barris to pen the script with original writers Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Barris is exec producer.

Hustle & Flowfilmmaker Craig Brewer will direct. The plot follows Akeem as he learns about a long-lost son in America, so he returns to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.

In the original comedy Murphy played Prince Akeem, son of King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones) and Queen Aoleon (Madge Sinclair). Along with his personal assistant Semmi (Arsenio Hall), Akeem travels to the only place to find Queens, New York to find the perfect Queen. While working at McDowells, Akeem finds the woman of his dreams Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley).  Murphy and Hall played multiple small characters in the movie.
