X-Men: Dark Phoenix will have the X-Men facing off against one of their own after Jean Grey’s morphs into the Phoenix.
This is the second time that the franchise has attempted to introduce the Dark Phoenix. Director Simon Kinberg take is to set it the movie apart with emotional depth.
The X-Men, including Jean Grey, Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), are heroes when the film begins and sent up to save some stranded astronauts. But a solar flare hits the X-Jet and all hell breaks loose. “Jean absorbs those solar flares and then hurls them back out into space,” explains director Simon Kinberg of the sequence shown in the above exclusive concept art. “That’s what triggers, awakens, creates this Phoenix force and voice inside her. What appears to the world to be another heroic victory by the X-Men in saving stranded people in space we realize is the thing that begins the unraveling of Jean and the unraveling of secrets Charles told her.”
Dark Phoenix takes place in 1992, which is 10 years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse and sees the X-Men as celebrities. The team will consist of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters), with Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) again leading the team.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters June 7th, 2019.
