Guardians of The Galaxy surpasses original estimates by over 20 million
The end of the weekend is upon us and thus the box office numbers are too. This weekend saw the opening of Marvel’s highly anticipated and highly speculated new entry – Guardians of the Galaxy. The film was aiming for a 70 million dollar opening weekend as estimated by the studio but it seems Star Lord and his gang of misfits had other plans. The film opened to the tune of 94 million domestically, with a 37.8 million opening day haul. The film has already earned another 66.4 million internationally which brings its worldwide haul to 160.4 million.
James Brown Biopic opens in 3rd
The only other newcomer this weekend, the James Brown Biopic ‘Get on up’ opened to 3rd place, earning a soft 14 million. The film fell 4 million behind Lucy, the Scarlett Johansson led action film from director Luc besson, which earned 18.2 million. Rounding out the top 5, Hercules earned 10.7 million and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes earned 8.7 million.
Transformers: Age of Extinction crosses 1 billion
As predicted, Transformers: Age of Extinction became the first film of 2014 to cross the coveted billion dollar box office mark. The film earned 2.2 million domestically this weekend. The film has earned 241.1 million domestically and 763.8 million internationally to bring its total box office gross to 1 billion 4.9 million and climbing.
