The news this week is the back and forth struggle between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Guardians of The Galaxy has swung back in the Guardians’ favor. The film is back at the top spot in the United States after the weekend earnings of 17.2 million. The Marvel film has now amassed 251.4 million making it the 3rd highest grossing film in the U.S. in 2014. If it can keep pace, it should easily out-earn Marvel’s other 2014 offering – Captain America: The Winter Soldier which earned 259.7 million before bowing out of the US Box Office race. The number 2 earner in the U.S. this year is still The Lego Movie with 257.7 million.
American box office news aside, Transformers: Age of Extinction has moved up another notch in its rise up the all time earners ladder. The film unseated Toy Story 3 with its current earnings of 1.065 billion a good 2 million more than Toy Story 3’s 1.063 million. If the film manages another million before exiting its theatrical run, it will move up one notch to 11th and unseat Pirates of The Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest.
In newcomer news, the Sin City sequel earned a paltry 6.3 million stateside and 4.6 million internationally for a weekend worldwide haul of 10.9 million – The film has been classified as a box office bust at this point, time will tell if it has any legs. When the Game Stands tall opened in 5th place to the tune of 8.3 million. The highest newcomer this past weekend was the drama ‘If I stay’ from director R.J. Cutler. The film opened to a domestic haul of 15.6 million dollars.
