The Amazing Spider-Man finally debuted stateside, and how did he do? Amazing of course. The second in the Marc Webb directed Sony franchise opened to 91.6 million. Worldwide, the film is already at an astounding 374 million and rising. At this rate, the film will cross 500 million by the end of this weekend. This, despite harsh reception from critics and some hardcore fans alike.
The film faces strong competition in the coming month though, as the highly anticipated ‘Godzilla’ opens May 16th and X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23rd. Maleficent, the Disney live action feature releases May 30th. These 3 films alone stand to take a huge chunk of the month out of The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s profit prospects.
In other Superhero film news, Captain America: The winter Soldier is still in the top 5 this weekend with 7.7 million, and inching ever closer to a 700 million dollar box office haul. The film currently sits at 680.3 million.
