Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther has broken down many barriers for Marvel Studio. One of the crowning achievements for the film was winning two Oscars.
The movie won for Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter) and Best Production Design (Hannah Beachler, Jay Hart).
“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” Carter said in her acceptance speech. “It’s been my life’s honor to create costumes. Thank you to the Academy, and thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen.”
It also became the ninth highest-grossing film of all time with over $1.35 billion in sales worldwide as well as the third highest-grossing film of all time in North America with over $700 million.
Black Panther was also nominated for Best Original Score, Best Original Song (“All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA), Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Picture.
